Objectives

On completion of this module, students will be able to; 1) recognise and apply basic general management skills in the areas of planning, organising, directing & controlling, 2) demonstrate familiarity with and application of standard management practices, e.g. committee meeting procedure, action planning, evaluation and appraisal systems, 3) develop and employ functional concepts and operations in activities such as marketing, finance, personnel, etc.

Syllabus

The syllabus will comprise two related strands. The first emphasises the use of personal management skills. Methods of identifying, selecting, assessing, prioritising and enhancing management skills will be introduced and practised. In particular, standard professional techniques, methodologies and issues will be emphasised. Topics likely to be selected by students are time-management, communication skills, leadership and motivation. These will be approached through class and group exercises. Many of these will involve group and individual activities outside the formal classes. The second strand locates such individual competencies within organisational contexts. Both the immediate work group and the wider organisation will be considered, but with emphasis on the former, drawing on external experience and research evidence more for the latter. The Teaching Company format provides opportunities both to practice and develop management skills and to increase understanding of their application within management functions. The limited and disparate work experiences of students will be incorporated through these shared project activities.
